Blanch’s are a locally based family owned and operated bus company.
In 1976, the Blanch family purchased Farrells Bus Service which at the time provided one local service to the only schools operating in Byron Bay (Byron Bay Primary School and St Finbarrs Convent School) and one other service from Byron Bay to Ballina via Lennox Head.
Coastal development was commencing especially at Lennox Head, which resulted in an almost immediate need to purchase more vehicles to place in to service.
In 1979 Mitchells Motors at Ballina were purchased from the Mitchell and Fleming families, which extended service provision to include Bangalow and Fernleigh and Newrybar. The fleet now comprised 10 vehicles encompassing school services, passenger route services, charter and tours.
The 1980’s was a period of rapid expansion for both the company and the area in general. Large residential areas were being developed which led to increased school student numbers. School services developed quickly. Self drive mini buses were included in the fleet for the first time and long distance tours and charter were being catered for with state of the art luxury coaches. The fleet totalled 25 vehicles.
Whilst continuing business acquisitions during the 1990’s, this period also brought about a business rationalisation program to better meet the standards of the 1990 Passenger Transport Act. The services between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby were purchased from Byron Bus & Coach at the end of 1993, which ultimately resulted in through services being able to operate between Ballina and Mullumbimby to provide better services to the local community.
1995 was when the fleet peaked at 37 vehicles prior to the staged withdrawal from providing long distance coach and tourist services and the removal of self drive mini buses from the fleet.
1995 also saw the development of the present depot site in Ballina which was ultimately completed early in 1997. For the first time, all vehicle servicing occurred in Ballina, with the Byron Bay depot becoming a bus parking and cleaning facility only.
The business continued with the development of a new depot facility at Byron Bay early in 1999 and the purchase from Summerland Coaches a short time after of the Bangalow to Byron Bay school services.
Today, Blanch’s provide comprehensive school and route services in and around Ballina, Lennox Head, Suffolk Park, Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Bangalow with a fleet of just under 30 vehicles and a staff of 40 drivers and support staff. Blanch’s provide transport services to major local events such as The East Coast Blues & Roots Festival (Easter), Splendour In The Grass (July) and Byron Bay New Years Eve.
